“The ploughed earth seemed to go on forever, spreading in all directions towards a horizon so distant that it hardly existed. It was interrupted only by the occasional pale farmhouse, bricks turned green by the damp that pervaded everything. You could see it rising, that cold winter damp, lifting like wraiths from the black soil and drifting across the fields. The other-worldliness of it was enchanting.”
